Edouard Mendy
Mendy could be one of the lucky Chelsea players to be offered a new contract once the ownership has officially changed hands.
According to The Telegraph, Mendy might join Mason Mount and Reece James in being presented a fresh deal by Todd Boehly and his team.
Mendy to be offered a new contract
The goalkeeper is currently contracted until 2025, with it more a matter of when not if he extends his stay even further.
There aren’t many members of Thomas Tuchel’s squad guaranteed to be a regular starter next season.
Other than James, Mount, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell and possibly Mateo Kovacic, each position is pretty much up for grabs.
Apart from in between the sticks, where Mendy could be stationed for potentially the next half a decade at least.
Although his form dipped towards the latter end of the term, the 30-year-old is still far and away the first choice ‘keeper.
Admittedly, the competition from Kepa Arrizabalaga and Marcus Bettinelli isn’t exactly the toughest.
However, their fellow gloved guardian remains very much the pick of the bunch and will continue to be unless there is a major change of fortunes.
What else does Boehly need to address?
Boehly seemingly shares this view, as he prepares to push Chelsea forward into a new era.
This will largely involve making new signings to improve Tuchel’s group, who are clearly a few rungs below Liverpool and Manchester City right now.
But the soon-to-be owner must get his own house in order before adding extra furniture.
He has already seen Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen be allowed to walk away as free agents.
Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta could also follow suit, whilst there are concerns over several of the attacking players who misfired consistently throughout the campaign.
To avoid any further doubts, Boehly is apparently looking to tie down Mount and James before they have their heads turned by any outside offers.
Then he can move on to upgrading Mendy’s contract to ensure Chelsea’s spine remains solid for a few more years.
